Cibyrae

Cibyra (in Phrygia, in southwestern Asia Minor), one of the cities of the conventus of the Roman governor of Asia, capital of the Cibyratis. Under Murena (84 BC) it had lost its semi-independent status and been incorporated. It produced the artist-brothers Tlepolemus and Hiero (Verr. 2.4.30); Cicero held assize there in his Cilician proconsulship (Ad Att. 5.21).

Panthers from the region of Cibyra in Phrygia were prized for the beast-hunts (venationes) of Roman games; Roman magistrates routinely pressed provincials to supply them, a favour Cicero conspicuously declined to extract.

Cibyra was a city in Phrygia (south-west Asia Minor), in the conventus of Laodicea; Cicero passed through the region during his Cilician proconsulship (51--50 BC), and the phrase "where I left him" shows Avianius accompanied or followed Cicero to that province, staying on for business.
