Naples and Cumae were neighbouring towns on the Bay of Naples; their delegations had earned Caesar's displeasure, probably for backing Pompey. Cicero's seaside villa lay in this district, so the local politics touched him directly.

Naples (Neapolis), a Greek-flavoured resort town on the Bay of Naples. Cicero's point is that Sulla spent the crisis at a fashionable retreat suited to consoling the dejected, nowhere near the theatres of conspiracy.
