  The country estate at Tusculum belonging to L. Licinius Crassus (cos. 95), the dramatic setting of much of the De Oratore; here Cicero gives the De Republica a similar villa setting.

• Ad Atticum 12.46 §1 go on from Lanuvium to the Tusculanum

  The Tusculanum was Cicero's favourite villa in the Alban hills, the setting of much of his philosophical writing and full of memories of Tullia. Returning to it is the ordeal he is steeling himself to face here, reasoning that the grief will follow him wherever he goes.
