Headnote
Cicero to Atticus, written from the Tusculanum on the sixth day before the Ides of June 709 AUC — 8 June 45 BC (the manuscript dateline: Scr.\ in Tusculano vi Id.\ Iun.\ a.\ 709 (45)). A note of errands the morning after Atticus’ departure: a packet to be forwarded to Vestorius, an enquiry about Q.~Staberius’ estate or any other property for sale near Pompeii or Nola, Brutus’ epitome of the Caelian annals, and a Greek philosophical text — [Greek: Panaitiou peri Pronoias], Panaetius On Providence — to be fetched from Philoxenus. The closing line points to a reunion at the Ides (the 13th), five days off; the philosophical discipline and the property search continue side by side.
Plainly there was nothing for me to write to you about; you had only just left, and a little later you had sent back the triple-tablets. Please see to it that the packet is delivered to Vestorius, and put someone on the job of finding out whether Q.~Staberius’ estate, or any other, is up for sale in the territory of Pompeii or Nola. Send me, please, Brutus’ epitome of the Caelian annals, and from Philoxenus Panaetius On Providence Panaitiou peri Pronoias. I shall see you on the Ides with your people.
