whole Italic war

also: the whole Italic war

The Social or Marsic War (91-87 BC), in which Rome's Italian allies revolted to demand citizenship after the murder of the tribune M. Livius Drusus. Hard-fought campaigns ended with the extension of the civitas to the peninsula and the political reorganization of Italy. Cicero, who fought briefly as a young man under Pompeius Strabo, refers to it as a touchstone for senatorial duty (Phil. 8) and as a chronological marker in the careers of older Romans.
