Supplicatio

the supplicatio

also: supplicatio, public thanksgiving, thanksgiving

A public thanksgiving decreed by the Senate, ordering days of prayer and offerings at the temples to honour a military success; for a commander it was the customary prelude to (though not a guarantee of) a triumph. Cicero campaigned for one after his Cilician victories of 51 BC.
