The equestrian order (equites), the wealthy non-senatorial class of Rome from which jury-panels and the tax-farming publicani were largely drawn; the concordia between them and the senate (concordia ordinum) was the cornerstone of Cicero's political programme (Att. 1.14.4). Distinct from the publicani (institution:publicani), who are a subset.
