Ruteni

also: the Ruteni

A Celtic people of southern Gaul, settled around modern Rodez (Aveyron) in the upland country between the Cevennes and the Garonne. They had been brought under Roman authority during the campaigns of the 120s BC and lay within the Transalpine province administered by Fonteius. Cicero pairs them with the Allobroges in Pro Fonteio as hostile Gallic witnesses whose testimony, he insists, should carry no weight against a Roman governor.
