interrex

also: interregibus, interregnis, interrex

A senator appointed for five-day terms to hold elections when both consulships fell vacant, a recurring expedient during the electoral paralysis of 54-53 BC. Cicero jokes that with so many interregna no one needs a jurist's advice (Fam. 7.11.1).
