A. Terentius Varro Murena

Varro Murena

also: Varro Murena, Varronis, A. Varro Murena, Murena

Roman of the late Republic and early Principate who bore the cognomen Murena through adoption into or alliance with the Licinia Murena family; active correspondent and friend of Cicero in 46-44 BC, independently commending T. Manlius to Servius Sulpicius (Fam. 13.22). Likely identical with A. Terentius Varro Murena, consul suffect 23 BC, later executed for alleged conspiracy against Augustus. UNCERTAIN: the identification with the consul of 23 BC rests on the rare double name; flag for review.
