Agathocles (361-289 BC), tyrant and then self-styled king of Syracuse from 317, who waged a long and famous war against Carthage and at one point carried it onto African soil. Cicero refers to him at Verr. 2.4.122 for the painted panels of his cavalry battle which adorned the temple of Athena on Ortygia and which Verres stripped from the building.
