Antiochus of Ascalon

Antiochus

also: Antiochinas, Antiochus, partis Antiochinas

Greek philosopher (c. 130-68 BC), head of the Academy who broke with the scepticism of Philo of Larissa and revived a dogmatic, Stoicizing Platonism (the 'Old Academy'). Varro was his pupil and adherent; in Cicero's Academica Varro expounds Antiochus's position against the scepticism Cicero (after Philo) defends.
