Greek hero, tamer of Pegasus and slayer of the Chimaera, who in later life fell from divine favour and wandered the Aleian plain in solitary grief. Cicero quotes Homer's depiction of him (Iliad 6.200-202) as eating his own heart and shunning the paths of men.
