C. Coelius Caldus, novus homo of plebeian stock, tribune of the plebs 107 BC (carrier of the lex Coelia tabellaria), praetor c. 99, consul in 94 BC. Cicero pairs him with Marius and Fimbria as a model of the new man rising by hard work (Verr. 2.5.181; Pro Murena 17) and notices his oratorical reputation at Brut. 165.
