Gaius Mucius Scaevola

C. Mucius

also: C. Mucium, Gaius Mucius, Mucius Cordus, Scaevola

Legendary Roman who entered the camp of Lars Porsena to kill him, and burned his own right hand to show his contempt of pain, earning the cognomen Scaevola ('left-handed'). Cicero (Paradoxa 12) cites his attempt on Porsena as an act done with no hope of personal safety.
