A new man elected consul for 105 BC, defeating the far more distinguished Quintus Lutatius Catulus, whose disaster at Arausio against the Cimbri later ruined his reputation. Cicero cites his upset electoral victory over Catulus as proof of how unpredictable Roman assemblies are.
