Demaratus of Corinth

Demaratus

also: Damaratus, Damaratus, the father of our king Tarquin

A wealthy Corinthian who fled the tyranny of Cypselus and settled at Tarquinii in Etruria, where he established his fortune and fathered Lucius Tarquinius Priscus, the fifth king of Rome. Cicero cites him as a man who wisely chose the freedom of exile over servitude at home.
