Hippias

also: Hippias son of Pisistratus, Hippias the son of Pisistratus

Tyrant of Athens, son of Pisistratus, expelled in 510 BC; he fell at the battle of Marathon (490 BC) fighting on the Persian side against his own city. Cicero cites him as one who criminally bore arms against his fatherland. Distinct from the sophists Hippias of Elis and Hippias of Calacte.
