Consul 251 and 247 BC and pontifex maximus, who rushed into the burning temple of Vesta in 241 BC and saved the Palladium, reportedly losing his sight. Cicero invokes him as the ancestral rescuer of Scaurus's house and of Rome's sacred pledge.
