L. Licinius Murena, praetor 88 BC and propraetor of Asia after Sulla's departure; he provoked the Second Mithridatic War (83-82 BC), was withdrawn by Sulla, and triumphed in 81. Father of the consul of 62 BC whom Cicero defended (Verr. 2.1.89; Pro lege Manilia 8). The Murenae take their cognomen from this branch of the Licinii.
