Lucius Mummius

also: L. Mummio, L. Mummius

L. Mummius Achaicus, consul 146 BC and conqueror of the Achaean League; his sack of Corinth and the celebrated triumph of 145, bringing Greek statuary in unprecedented quantity to Rome, made him a moral exemplum either of upright restraint (so Cicero, Verr. 2.1.55; 2.4.4) or of philistine ignorance (so the anecdotes about his shipping art-treasures).
