Manius Aquilius

also: M'. Aquilium, M'. Aquili, trial of Manius Aquilius

M'. Aquillius, consul 101 BC and finisher of the Second Sicilian Slave War (101-100). Prosecuted for repetundae in 98, he was acquitted in the celebrated trial in which M. Antonius bared his old soldier's scars to the jury (Pro Flacco 98; Verr. 2.5.3; De off. 2.50). Later sent to Asia, where he was captured by Mithridates in 88 and killed by molten gold poured down his throat.
