M. Claudius Marcellus Aeserninus, a young noble whose family had the patronage of Sicily by inheritance from M. Marcellus the conqueror of Syracuse; Verres had hoped to claim that Marcellus had bought the Mercury of Tyndaris from him (Verr. 2.4.91). Marcellus refused to lend his name to the imposture.
