M. Terentius Varro of Reate (116-27 BC), antiquarian, polymath, and the most learned Roman of his age; author of the Antiquitates, De Lingua Latina, and De Re Rustica. A prickly figure close to Pompey, whom Cicero courted warily in 59 BC.
