L. Caecilius Metellus (cos. 251 and 247) and Q. Caecilius Metellus (cos. 206) — or, more probably, the Q. Metellus Macedonicus (cos. 143) and his brother L. Metellus Calvus (cos. 142) — are cited at Pro Fonteio 23 as examples of weighty Roman witnesses in the conventional gallery of Republican exempla. Other identifications are possible.
