Mithridates

Mithridates VI Eupator, king of Pontus c. 120–63 BC; Rome's most formidable Eastern enemy of the late Republic, fought across three wars (89–85, 83–81, 73–63 BC). Cicero invokes him repeatedly in the Verrines (already at 2.2) as the threat that made Sicily's loyalty and good government crucial.
