Q. Fabius Maximus Verrucosus Cunctator, five times consul (233-209 BC), dictator 217 in the dark days after Trasimene, the architect of the Fabian strategy of delay against Hannibal. The standing exemplum of patient Roman virtue (Verr. 2.4.4 — though the Maximus there is the conqueror of Tarentum; Pro Sest. 143; Pro lege Manilia 47).
