Sopater Halicyensis

also: Sopater of Halicyae

Sopater of Halicyae, a leading Sicilian of his town, acquitted on a capital charge before C. Sacerdos but afterwards re-tried before Verres's rigged council and bound naked to a bronze equestrian statue in winter rain until he was rescued (Verr. 2.2.68-78). One of the dramatic set-pieces of the speech.
