The Greek mainland south of Macedonia — the region of Athens, Corinth, Sparta, and the old Peloponnesian and Boeotian cities. From 146 BC under direct Roman control through the governor of Macedonia, formally a separate province only under Augustus; Verres traversed it on his eastward journey before the praetorship (In Verrem 2.1).
