The mountainous promontory of the Chalcidice peninsula in northern Greece, through whose isthmus Xerxes is said to have cut a canal for his fleet during the invasion of 480 BC. Cicero invokes the feat in De Finibus 2.112 to figure the disproportion between great effort and trivial end.
