Chios, the great Greek island off the coast of Ionia, claimant to the birthplace of Homer, a free ally of Rome from the late 3rd century BC. Famous for its wine. Verres stripped it of statues (Verr. 2.1.49); the Charidemus of Verr. 2.1.52 was a Chian trierarch.
