Cos, an island of the southern Sporades off the Carian coast, famous for the great sanctuary of Asclepius, for silk and for sweet wine. The Coans recovered their Aphrodite Anadyomene of Apelles from Roman hands but Verres in his Asian travels passed through (Verr. 2.4.135). Birthplace of Hippocrates.
