Drepanitano

also: Drepanum

Drepanum (modern Trapani), the great natural harbour at the north-western corner of Sicily, just below Mt Eryx, in the Carthaginian-leaning west of the island. One of the assize towns of the Sicilian governor's circuit, used by Verres for his Pipa and fleet-disaster outrages (Verr. 2.2.140; 2.5.85). The harbour itself was the scene of P. Claudius Pulcher's defeat in 249 BC.
