A Greek colony on the coast of Lucania in southern Italy, home of the Eleatic school of philosophy (Parmenides and Zeno of Elea). Cicero names Zeno of Elea, who endured torture rather than betray his fellow conspirators, as a noble image of fortitude under pain.
