Elis

City and territory in the north-western Peloponnese, famous as the home of the Olympic sanctuary and games. In the Roman period Elis was part of the province of Achaea and lay under the jurisdiction of the proconsul. Roman negotiatores (merchants and businessmen) were active there, as attested by M. Mindius (Fam. 13.26).
