Engyium, a small inland town of north-central Sicily celebrated for its ancient sanctuary of the Great Mother (Magna Mater); P. Scipio Aemilianus had returned its plundered cult-objects to the town after the Third Punic War. Verres stripped the sanctuary in his governorship (Verr. 2.4.97).
