Halicarnasi

Halicarnassus, the great Carian city, birthplace of Herodotus and seat of the famous Mausoleum of Mausolus (one of the Seven Wonders). Under Roman rule it had decayed but was restored in part by Q. Cicero in his Asian proconsulship (Ad Q. fr. 1.1.25); Verres stripped its public spaces on the journey home from Cilicia (Verr. 2.1.49).
