The Hellespont (modern Dardanelles), the narrow strait between Europe and Asia connecting the Aegean to the Propontis; the standing northern frontier of the province of Asia (Verr. 2.1.63 of Lampsacus; Ad fam. 13.53 of Parium). Famous for Xerxes's bridge, the Trojan War, and Roman customs-collection.
