the underworld (Inferi)

the underworld

also: inferos, apud inferos, the underworld, the dead

The realm of the dead beneath the earth in Greco-Roman belief, peopled by shades and ruled with its rivers, judges, and monsters. Cicero repeatedly invokes 'apud inferos' as the poetic-mythical underworld whose terrors he sets out to debunk.
