also: Lilybaeum

Lilybaeum (modern Marsala), the great port and stronghold at the western tip of Sicily, founded by the Carthaginians in 396 BC and the seat of the quaestor of Western Sicily under Rome. Cicero served here as quaestor under Sex. Peducaeus in 75 BC, and the city is the locus of many of the central Verrine outrages (the seizure of the Boethus hydria, the silver of Diodorus the Maltese, etc., Verr. 2.4.37 etc.). One of the assize-towns of the province.
