Miletus, the great Ionian city at the mouth of the Maeander, mother of the Pontic and Black Sea colonies and a free city under Rome. Verres extorted from the Milesians a war-ship from their squadron of ten on the way to Myndus and stripped their wool warehouses (Verr. 2.1.86-89). Under the late Republic still a centre of trade and culture.
