Ortygia (the Island), the original nucleus of Syracuse, an island at the mouth of the Greater Harbour later joined to the mainland by a causeway. It contained the praetorian residence (the old palace of King Hiero), the great temple of Athena (later Cathedral), the temple of Diana, the spring Arethusa, and the headquarters of the Roman administration (Verr. 2.4.118).
