Panhormus (modern Palermo), the chief port of north-western Sicily, a Carthaginian foundation captured by Rome in the First Punic War. One of the principal assize towns of the Sicilian governor and the scene of the celebrated case of Apollonius son of Diocles (Verr. 2.5.16). Home of the Lucullan circle (Ad Att. 1.19.10).
