Pergamum, the great Hellenistic capital of the Attalid kingdom, bequeathed to Rome in 133 BC and the chief city of the province of Asia. Famous for its great altar of Zeus, library (the parchment-rival of Alexandria), and gymnasium. Frequent in Cicero (Pro Flacco 17, 76 etc.) as the home of Mithridatic and Asian witnesses.
