Samos, the great Ionian island off the Lydian coast, traditional birthplace of Pythagoras and seat of the Heraion (one of the oldest and largest Greek temples). A free city under Rome, plundered of the Heraeum's statuary by Verres (Verr. 2.1.50). Frequent in Cicero (Pro lege Manilia 33; Ad Q. fr. 1.1.25; Phil. 11.5).
