Sinope, the great Greek city on the southern Black Sea coast, capital of the kingdom of Pontus and birthplace of Diogenes the Cynic and Mithridates Eupator. Taken by Lucullus in 70 BC (Pro lege Manilia 21) and a recurring point of reference in the politics of the East (De lege agr. 2.53).
