Utica, the great Phoenician city on the African coast north of Carthage; from 146 BC the capital of the Roman province of Africa and seat of its governor. The standing eastern port of arrival in the Mediterranean grain trade. Famous for the death of M. Cato Uticensis in 46 BC; named at Verr. 2.1.70 (the burning of M. Fabius Hadrianus by the resident Roman citizens).
