Velia

Velia (Elea), the old Greek city on the western coast of Lucania (modern Marina di Ascea), birthplace of Parmenides and Zeno; in late Republican times a small but pleasant retreat. Cicero met Brutus here on his return from Greece in 44 BC (Phil. 1.9; 10.8) and Verres's Syracusan ship was brought to Velia (Verr. 2.5.44).
