Pomptinus

Praetor 63 BC who as governor of Gallia Narbonensis defeated the Allobroges; later one of Cicero's legates in Cilicia (51 BC), commanding part of the army in the Amanus campaign and the capture of Commoris (Fam. 15.4).

C. Pomptinus, praetor 63 and governor of Transalpine Gaul, had long sought a triumph for his victory over the Allobroges. Tribunes and praetors disputed its legality, so it was finally staged in 54 BC under cover of an early-morning vote and the consul Appius's backing.
