• Ad Atticum 2.3 §1 Valerius has been acquitted, with Hortensius defending

  An obscure trial of 60-59 BC: a Valerius was acquitted with the great orator Q. Hortensius Hortalus as defence counsel. Cicero suggests the case was fixed ("donated to the son of Aulus").

• Ad Atticum 2.25 §1 your other friend Hortalus

  Hortalus is a familiar form of the name of Q. Hortensius Hortalus, the great orator and Cicero's chief forensic rival, here praised for a generous speech extolling Cicero's record.

• Ad Atticum 3.9 §2 bring Hortensius over

  Q. Hortensius Hortalus, the leading orator before Cicero; Cicero suspected him of false friendship and even of conniving at the exile, hence the wary "bring him over."

• Ad Atticum 4.6 §3 the piece against Hortensius

  Hortensius had earlier promised at Cumae to oppose any extension of Cicero's command beyond its single year. The report that he was now speaking in favour of prorogation alarmed Cicero, who begged Atticus to hold him to his pledge.

  Q. Hortensius Hortalus (114–50 BC), Cicero's great rival at the bar and later close friend; he had survived both Sulla's dictatorship and the upheavals of the 80s BC without taking up arms, a record Cicero now consciously emulates.

  Q. Hortensius Hortalus, Cicero's great rival at the bar, renowned for a memory so exact he could repeat an entire auction unaided. 'Our own' marks him as a Roman contemporary among the Greek examples.
